Lip Flip Nottingham | Signature Aesthetics

Not every client who wants more definition in their lips wants filler. For some people the concern is quite specific — the upper lip disappears when they smile, rolls inward when they talk, or simply lacks the natural definition it once had. It's a subtle thing but one that clients notice about themselves regularly, and it's exactly the kind of concern a lip flip is designed to address.

A lip flip is one of the more nuanced anti-wrinkle treatments I offer at Signature Aesthetics — it uses a small amount of botulinum toxin rather than filler, requires no significant downtime, and produces a result that is genuinely subtle. For clients who are curious about doing something with their lips but aren't ready to commit to filler, it can be a really useful starting point.

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip involves placing a small amount of botulinum toxin into the orbicularis oris — the circular muscle that surrounds the mouth. By relaxing the upper portion of this muscle, the upper lip is encouraged to roll very slightly outward and upward, giving the appearance of a fuller, more defined upper lip without adding any volume.

The result is subtle by design. A lip flip doesn't add volume in the way that filler does — it simply changes the position of the upper lip slightly to reveal more of its surface. For clients with a lip that rolls inward or disappears on smiling, this can make a noticeable difference to the overall appearance of the mouth area.

How Is the Treatment Carried Out?

I place a small number of carefully positioned injections along the upper border of the lip — into the orbicularis oris muscle just above the cupid's bow. The treatment takes around 10 to 15 minutes and is straightforward in experienced hands, though precision is important — too much product or incorrect placement can temporarily affect the ability to purse the lips or use a straw, which is something I always discuss honestly before proceeding.

I see clients for this treatment from across Nottingham and surrounding areas including Sneinton, St Ann's, Mapperley Park, and Thorneywood — many of whom have come across the treatment on social media and want an honest assessment of whether it's right for them specifically before committing to anything.

Lip Flip vs Lip Filler — Which Is Right for Me?

This is probably the question I get asked most in relation to this treatment, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you're hoping to achieve.

A lip flip is best suited to clients who:

  • Want subtle definition rather than added volume
  • Find their upper lip disappears or rolls inward when they smile
  • Are considering lip filler for the first time and want to try something less committed first
  • Have a good amount of natural lip volume but want better definition of the border

Lip filler is better suited to clients who:

  • Want a visible increase in volume
  • Are looking to balance the proportions between upper and lower lip
  • Want to address fine lines around the mouth alongside lip enhancement
  • Have had a lip flip before and want a more pronounced result

In some cases, a combination of both can give the most complete result — a lip flip to improve the position and roll of the upper lip, alongside a conservative amount of filler for subtle volume. This is something I'll discuss during your consultation based on your individual lip anatomy and what you'd like to achieve.

What Results Can I Expect?

Results from a lip flip begin to show within three to five days and are fully visible at around two weeks. The upper lip will appear slightly more defined and fuller at rest, and will roll outward rather than inward on smiling. The change is intentionally subtle — clients tend to notice it themselves before anyone else does, which for many people is exactly what they're looking for.

Results typically last between two and three months — slightly shorter than other anti-wrinkle treatment areas due to the high level of muscle activity around the mouth. I'll discuss this during your consultation so you have a realistic expectation of how often a top-up would be needed.

An Honest Note on Lip Flips

Please be aware that a lip flip is not a replacement for lip filler if volume is what you're after. It's a treatment that works beautifully within its limitations but those limitations are real, and I'd rather have that conversation clearly at consultation than have a client leave disappointed because their expectations weren't aligned with what the treatment can deliver.

If you come to me wanting a lip flip and I think filler would better address your concern, I'll say so. And equally, if you come in wanting filler and I think a lip flip is actually all you need, I'll say that too.

Lip Flip FAQs

  • Will a lip flip make my lips look obviously different?

No - and that's rather the point. A lip flip produces a subtle change in the position and appearance of the upper lip rather than a dramatic transformation. Most clients find that friends and family notice they look well or refreshed without being able to identify exactly what's changed. If you're looking for a more obvious enhancement, lip filler is likely to be a better fit.

  • Will I be able to drink through a straw or whistle after a lip flip?

For the first week or two after treatment, some clients find activities that require pursing the lips, such as using a straw, playing a wind instrument, or whistling - feel slightly different or more effortful. This is temporary and resolves as the initial effects settle. It's something I always mention before treatment so clients can plan accordingly, particularly if it would affect their work or daily routine.

  • How is a lip flip different from lip filler?

A lip flip uses botulinum toxin to relax the muscle above the upper lip, causing it to roll slightly outward for a fuller appearance. Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid injected directly into the lip to add volume and definition. A lip flip doesn't add volume — it changes the lip's position. Filler adds physical volume and can also define the border and shape of the lips. Both are valid treatments but they achieve different things.

  • Can I have a lip flip if I already have lip filler?

Yes, in many cases. If you have existing filler in your lips and want to improve the position of your upper lip or reduce the inward rolling on smiling, a lip flip can complement your filler very effectively. I'll assess your lips during consultation to make sure the combination is appropriate for you.

  • How long does a lip flip last compared to lip filler?

A lip flip typically lasts two to three months due to the high level of muscle activity around the mouth. Lip filler generally lasts longer — around six to twelve months depending on the individual and the amount used. The shorter duration of a lip flip is worth factoring into your decision, particularly if you're comparing the cost and commitment of both options.

  • Is a lip flip painful?

The lip area is more sensitive than some other treatment areas, but most clients find a lip flip very manageable. The number of injection points is small and the treatment is over quickly. I work carefully and efficiently to keep any discomfort as brief as possible.

  • Can a lip flip go wrong?

Like any aesthetic treatment, outcomes depend significantly on the skill and judgement of the practitioner. The most common issue with incorrectly administered lip flips is too much product being used, which can temporarily over-relax the muscle and affect lip function more than intended. I always use a conservative amount and assess your individual anatomy carefully before treating to minimise any risk of this.

  • I'm nervous about doing anything to my lips — where should I start?

A consultation is always the right starting point. Come and talk to me about what's bothering you and what you'd ideally like to change - I'll give you an honest assessment of your options, including whether a lip flip, filler, or simply doing nothing is the right choice for you right now. There's never any pressure to book a treatment on the day.
