Glabellar Lines Nottingham | Signature Aesthetics

Of all the concerns clients bring to me at Signature Aesthetics, glabellar lines — the vertical creases that form between the brows, commonly known as the 11's — are perhaps the most emotionally loaded. Unlike forehead lines or crow's feet, which tend to be associated with age or sun exposure, the 11's carry an expression with them. A resting face with deep glabellar lines can look permanently cross, stern, or stressed — even when the person is entirely relaxed and in good spirits.

I've had clients tell me that colleagues ask if they're annoyed, or that family members comment on them looking worried, when they feel nothing of the sort. That disconnect between how you feel and how you're being read by the people around you can be genuinely frustrating — and it's something anti-wrinkle injections can address very effectively.

What Causes Glabellar Lines?

The 11's are formed by repeated contraction of two muscles — the corrugator supercilii and the procerus. These are the muscles responsible for frowning, concentrating, and squinting — expressions we make dozens of times a day without realising. Over time, those repeated contractions create vertical lines between the brows that gradually become visible even when the face is completely at rest.

The depth and prominence of glabellar lines varies significantly between individuals. Some clients develop them relatively early, particularly those who spend a lot of time outdoors, work in front of screens, or naturally have a strong frown pattern. Others find they only become noticeable later in life. Either way, the treatment approach is the same.

How Is the Treatment Carried Out?

I inject small amounts of botulinum toxin into the corrugator and procerus muscles to reduce their activity and allow the skin between the brows to smooth out. The number of injection points and the amount of product used is tailored to each individual — a stronger muscle requires a different approach to a more subtle frown pattern.

The treatment takes around 15 to 20 minutes and there is no downtime involved. I currently see clients travelling in from across the Nottingham area including Stapleford, Sandiacre, Long Eaton, and Ilkeston, and the appointment fits easily into a normal working day.

What Results Can I Expect?

Results begin to show within three to five days of treatment and are fully visible at two weeks. For clients with mild to moderate glabellar lines, the improvement can be dramatic — the lines soften significantly and the face at rest looks considerably more relaxed and approachable. For clients with very deep established lines, improvement after a first treatment will be meaningful but the lines may not disappear entirely straightaway. With consistent treatment over time, results typically improve with each session.

I always see new clients at two weeks for a follow-up to assess the outcome properly and make any adjustments where needed.

Combining Glabellar Treatment With Other Areas

The glabellar area sits naturally within the upper face alongside the forehead and brow — and treating these areas together tends to give a more balanced, cohesive result than treating the 11's in isolation. I'll always discuss whether a combined approach makes sense for you, and I'll only suggest it if I genuinely believe it improves your overall outcome.

An Honest Note on Expectations

I want to ensure that you are fully aware of certain limitations of the treatment: very deep, established glabellar lines that are visible at rest even without any muscle movement and are what we call static lines. Anti-wrinkle injections are highly effective at addressing the dynamic component of these lines, the movement that deepens them, but for lines that are very deeply etched into the skin, a small amount of dermal filler to the area may be worth considering alongside the anti-wrinkle treatment. This is something I'll discuss honestly with you during your consultation if I think it's relevant to your situation.

Glabellar Lines FAQs

  • Will treating my 11's make me look expressionless?

No - and this is a concern I hear regularly. The goal is to reduce the frown movement sufficiently to prevent the lines from deepening and to soften their appearance at rest, not to eliminate all movement between the brows entirely. A well-treated glabellar area still allows natural subtle expression - it simply removes the deep, persistent frown that can make a relaxed face look tense or stern.

  • I frown a lot without realising — will this treatment help?

Yes, and this is actually one of the most common reasons clients come to me for glabellar treatment. Habitual frowning — often from concentration, screen use, or squinting in bright light — is a primary driver of 11's developing early. Treating the area reduces the muscle's ability to create that deep frown pattern, which over time can actually help break the habit too.

  • My lines are very deep — can injections alone fix them?

For very deep static lines, anti-wrinkle injections will significantly reduce their appearance but may not eliminate them entirely on their own. In some cases a small amount of dermal filler placed directly into the lines can complement the anti-wrinkle treatment to give a smoother result. I'll assess this during your consultation and give you an honest recommendation.

  • How long do results last in the glabellar area?

Typically three to four months, after which muscle activity gradually returns. The corrugator muscles tend to be strong in many clients, particularly those with a habitual frown pattern, which means some people find this area needs more regular treatment than others. With consistent appointments over time, the muscle typically weakens progressively and results can improve.

  • Is there any risk of affecting my brows with glabellar treatment?

Incorrect placement of product in the glabellar area can affect brow position, which is why careful assessment and precise technique matter enormously. I take time to evaluate each client's individual anatomy before treatment to ensure the brow position is not compromised. It's one of the reasons I'd always caution against choosing a practitioner based on price alone.

  • How soon can I have the area retreated?

I always recommend waiting until the full effect is visible at two weeks and then assessing from there. Top-up appointments are typically every three to four months to maintain results. I'd never recommend retreating an area sooner than necessary — allowing the product to work fully before adding more is always the right approach.

  • Can glabellar lines come back worse after treatment?

No — this is a common misconception. If you stop having treatment, the muscle activity gradually returns to what it was before and the lines return to their previous appearance. They do not worsen as a result of having been treated. In fact, regular treatment over time tends to have the opposite effect as the muscle weakens progressively.

  • Do you treat clients who are nervous about needles?

Absolutely, and you wouldn't be the first. I work at a pace that suits each individual client and I'm always happy to talk through exactly what's happening at each stage of the treatment. The needles used are very fine and the treatment is over quickly — most clients who come in nervous leave surprised by how manageable it was.
